About Ear Pinning

Ears that protrude or are oddly shaped can feel awkward to an adult—and traumatizing to a child. For a young patient, aesthetic ear improvement can have a significant impact on their self-esteem, especially if he or she had been teased or bullied as a result.

Otoplasty (ear pinning) is a surgical procedure that can effectively improve the shape, position and proportion of the ears. Dr. Bared has treated adults and children ages 6 or older, reduce protrusion and ear size to more average standards.

Otoplasty can correct any of the following ear imperfections:

  • Protrusion
  • Disproportion
  • Odd shape
  • Deformities

Are You a Candidate?

An otoplasty candidate, regardless of age,
should not have any chronic ear problems.

If the surgery is for a child, it is recommended to wait until at least 6 years of age. By this age, the cartilage will be stable enough for corrective surgery. The child should also be old enough to cooperate and follow instructions for the healing process. Dr. Bared can discuss this with you to be sure that your child has reached an appropriate age to undergo surgery.

The Procedure

When patients are missing the fold that allows ears to be held back, the result is protrusion.

Opposed to cutting, Dr. Bared prefers the cartilage sparing technique for natural outcomes and less risk to the patient. He creates a natural fold which then allows the ears to be set back.

The location and number of incisions will depend on the type of alteration. They are usually made on the back of the ear, or in a natural fold which will conceal any scarring that occurs after the procedure is finished. Dr. Bared may also use internal, non-removable sutures which will create and shape cartilage.

Recovering from Ear Pinning

The First 24 Hours

After the surgery is complete, you will be able to go home that same day. You will be given detailed instructions for post-op care. Expect itching and discomfort. Typically, a head wrap dressing is placed after surgery, removed the following day, and then replaced for several days thereafter.

The First Week

Be prepared for downtime from work or school. Stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity, and give yourself plenty of time to heal properly. After the dressing is removed a lighter, sports band dressing is used all day for the first week and then only at night for several weeks. This ensures that the ears are protected when sleeping. For children, it’s important to reassure them during this time and talk to them about the positive changes they should expect after healing.

The First Month

You will have one or two follow up appointments to check on the healing process and remove stitches if necessary. The follow-up visits with Dr. Bared will affect your ultimate outcome. If you follow all instructions, you can expect a full recovery and enjoy the results freely.

Full Recovery

Once the dressings can be removed, you will be able to see immediate results of the surgery.
