FEATURED ON
Hairline lowering, also known as forehead reduction or Surgical Hairline Advancement (SHA), is a surgical procedure that reduces forehead size by advancing the hairline. This technique creates a more balanced and proportionate appearance, addressing concerns like a high hairline or overly large forehead. Ideal for individuals seeking improved facial harmony, the procedure involves repositioning the scalp to lower the hairline by 1-2 centimeters. Often performed under local anesthesia, it can be combined with a brow lift for enhanced results.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG)
Hairline lowering is more common in women because they are more likely to have naturally high hairlines, which can create an imbalanced appearance and often lead to self-consciousness. Women with stable hairlines and good scalp flexibility are ideal candidates for this procedure, as it allows for significant forehead reduction without the risk of future hair loss affecting the results. The aesthetic goal is to create a proportional and feminine appearance.
However, this procedure is also suitable for men, especially those without active hair loss or those who have undergone prior hair transplants and wish to refine their hairline further. As a surgeon trained in the Forefront method, Dr. Bared carefully evaluates each patient’s candidacy by assessing scalp elasticity, hairline stability, and goals. With his expertise and aesthetic eye, patients receive personalized recommendations to achieve a balanced, natural result tailored to their unique features.

Hairline lowering, or Surgical Hairline Advancement (SHA), is a detailed surgical procedure that repositions the hairline lower on the forehead while maintaining a natural appearance. Dr. Bared begins by marking the new hairline and creating a precise incision along the existing one. This incision is carefully planned to preserve hair follicles at the edge of the hairline, ensuring regrowth through the eventual scar for a seamless and natural result.
The scalp is then gently separated from the underlying connective tissue, allowing it to be mobilized for advancement. Dr. Bared evaluates the scalp’s elasticity to determine how far the hairline can be safely advanced, typically by 1-2 centimeters. Once the scalp is repositioned, Endotine® clips are used to anchor it securely in the new position. Excess forehead skin is excised, and Dr. Bared uses layered plastic surgery techniques to close the incision.
Immediately following the procedure, your head will be wrapped to minimize swelling and protect the surgical area. This wrap is usually removed on the second day, at which point you can gently brush your hair forward over the sutures. Mild swelling and discomfort are common but manageable with prescribed pain medications. Most patients can resume non-strenuous activities, including work, within a week of surgery.
The sutures are typically removed about a week after the procedure, and if you’re traveling, a local doctor can assist with this. Dr. Bared designs recovery plans tailored to your needs, ensuring safe and effective results. For further refinement, you may opt for hair grafting three months after surgery to enhance density or conceal scarring.
Is hairline lowering permanent?
Yes, hairline lowering provides a permanent solution for reducing forehead size and advancing the hairline. The results are long-lasting as long as your hairline remains stable, which is why Dr. Bared carefully evaluates your candidacy to ensure the best outcomes.
How long does the procedure take?
The surgery typically takes less than two hours to complete. This includes making the incision, advancing the hairline, securing it in place with Endotine® clips, and closing the incision using advanced surgical techniques to promote optimal healing.
Will I have visible scars after surgery?
Dr. Bared places the incision along the natural hairline, preserving hair follicles so that hair grows through the scar. This approach minimizes scarring, making it virtually undetectable once healed. Hair grafting can be performed a few months after surgery for additional refinement.
