What Makes a Woman a Good Hair Transplant Candidate?

For women suffering from hair loss, hair transplants may provide a solution. However, not everyone is a good candidate for surgery.

How do you know if this procedure is right for you?

Your Hair and Scalp are Healthy

Certain diseases can cause hair to fall out, including psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus and ringworm. If you’re losing hair as the result of one of these conditions, your best option is to address the underlying cause instead of getting surgery.

However, if your hair is falling out without any apparent medical cause and you have enough healthy hair to act as a donor, a skilled transplant surgeon should be able to correct the problem.

Your Hair Loss Has a Particular Pattern

Some women lose hair in a pattern, such as when the hairline recedes.

As long as a sufficient donor site is available with hairs thick enough to provide healthy grafts, a hair transplant can be performed.

One exception in this case is if the area of baldness is very large. Trying to cover extensive areas with donor hairs can be difficult and may not provide the desired results.

You Have Traction Alopecia or Alopecia Marginalis

Have you been pulling your hair back in a tight ponytail or bun for years?

If so, you may have a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia or alopecia marginalis. Both result in hair falling out in response to constant tension or pull. Give your hair a break from snug styles to prevent further loss while looking into transplant options.

Your Hair Loss Was Caused by Trauma

Surgery, thermal or chemical burns to the scalp and injuries from accidents can all leave you with uneven bald patches. Fortunately, women with this type of hair loss often qualify for transplants.

Small patches are the easiest to cover and don’t require a large amount of donor follicles. As with other causes of hair loss, the donor hair must be healthy and thick enough to provide adequate coverage.

If your hair loss falls into one of these categories, you may be a good candidate for transplant surgery.
